Fly for $39

I'm a huge travel aficionado, but I'm an even bigger cheap travel aficionado. That's why I'm pretty excited about all this $39 business the airlines have going on right now. You have to buy the tickets by today, though, so if you want to go somewhere on the cheap, act fast!

Southwest's deals are good for one-way travel from March 15 through May 25 and, from Dallas, will get you to Amarillo, Austin, Harlingen, Houston, Kansas City, Little Rock, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, and Tulsa. Travel's valid except on Fridays and Sundays, and there are a couple of small fees not included in the $39. Tickets must be purchased by 1:59 a.m. (Central time).

American Airlines' deals are also good for one-way travel from March 15 through May 25 (Fridays and Sundays excluded), but read the fine print for embargo dates. Destinations include Austin, Lubbock, and New Orleans. Tickets must be purchased by 11:59 p.m. (Central time).

The Campisi family has been serving its wonderful thin crust pizza to Dallas for over 50 years. When I worked in downtown Dallas, one of my favorite things was that the downtown Campisi's location was just a short walk away.

The Campisi's in downtown Dallas serves up a complimentary pizza buffet during happy hour (5 p.m. to 7 p.m.) Monday through Friday with a purchase of an alcoholic beverage. And the drinks are VERY reasonably priced. Okay, so it is not 100 percent free, but this is pretty close since all you have to do is buy a drink. I used to work for an airline and still travel quite a bit, so I've got the whole packing-just-a-carry-on thing down to a science. In fact, I somehow managed to pack everything I needed for a 10-day trip to Europe in one rolling duffel bag. I was pretty proud of that. But then Christmas came around, and try as I did, I could not fit everyone's presents into my trusty carry-on bag. I had to bring out the big gun, a suitcase that, when empty, weighs about half of what I do (my family kindly poached all of my smaller suitcases).

What I really could've used to distinguish my rarely used case from the pack when at the carousel was a luggage tag. And thanks to KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, that won't be a problem anymore. I've hit many theme parks in my day — in Texas, Washington, California, South Carolina, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and England. Phew. That's a lot of loop-de-loops. My all-time favorite is Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio, but right here in town, we've got a great park: Six Flags Over Texas. If you love coasters as much as I do, consider buying a season pass that's good for 14 Six Flags across the country and beyond. The Play Pass is new for 2010 and at just $49.99, you only need to go a couple of times to make it worth it. (There's also the standard Season Pass for $10 more, which gets you a few extras.)
